Contract security guards at Kaiser Permanente's south Sacramento hospital are planning a three-day protest starting this morning over what they say are unfair labor practices by their employer, Inter-Con Security Systems Inc.
Pasadena-based Inter-Con has filed a complaint against Service Employees International Union Local 24/7 over the job action, said Belen Acosta-Bradley, Inter-Con's chief administrative officer.
SEIU has tried for nearly three years to organize the 1,500 Inter-Con guards posted at Kaiser facilities in California. The pickets will protest what SEIU says are Inter-Con's anti-union tactics, including threats and suspensions aimed at keeping the guards from organizing.
SEIU said it anticipates that about 400 Inter-Con employees will picket at Kaiser's Bruceville Road and 19 other Kaiser facilities around the state through Thursday.
Kaiser spokesman Jeff Hausman said Inter-Con has made provisions to ensure the security of the facility.
"There will be a full staff of on-duty security guards," Hausman said. "We do not expect these activities to have any impact on patient care or on the safety of our campus."
