Attorneys representing California drivers for SuperShuttle International Inc., an airport transportation firm with operations in Sacramento, have served a class-action lawsuit on the company, alleging it has violated various labor laws and owes drivers at least $100 million.
The lawsuit, filed earlier this month in Alameda County, alleges that the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company for at least four years has misclassified its shuttle drivers as "independent contractors" or "franchisees" to get around labor and pay rules, including minimum wage laws that apply to regular employees.
SuperShuttle did not immediately return calls Monday afternoon seeking comment. The company, a wholly-owned unit of Veolia Transportation Co., headquartered in Paris, France, claims it is America's largest provider of shared-ride van services. It has over 1,200 blue-and-yellow vans that transport more than 8 million passengers annually to and from 28 airports in 23 U.S. cities.
