Californians hoping to send Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger an e-mail through his Web site, govmail.ca.gov, were in for a rude awakening today, as the site was hacked by a group calling itself "Santanic Souls."

With a pitch black background and red text, the hacked site features an alien-like creature with steely gray eyes holding a glowing orb.

Much of the text on the page is gibberish

"Hackead by S4t$niCs_Souls," read the headline.

"Tking speak NO WAR," it read underneath

At about 4:15 p.m. the hacked version of the site was replaced with the traditional e-mail-the-governor tool.

See the site here.

Sabrina Lockhart, a spokeswoman for Schwarzenegger, said the hacked Web site was not an active part of the governor's Web page.

"It was a site that had been previously used to e-mail the governor but that changed when we revamped the Web site," said Lockhart.

In fact, Lockhart added, the administration "had been in the process of taking it down" today.
