DEAR SHOPPING: I love Lands' End shirts. Sears sells them, but they're hardly ever on sale. Could you find out where Lands' End sends its discontinued and end-of-season merchandise?
Harriet, Sacramento
DEAR HARRIET: I contacted Lands' End, and if you plan a vacation to Dodgeville, Wisc., the company's headquarters, around the first of August, a huge end-of-season sale will take place in a giant warehouse. Lands' End says Sears sells its products at its own prices. Also, if you go to www.landsend.com and click on "overstocks," you'll see the products the company is clearing out on sale.
DEAR SHOPPING: I noticed in an article last month in The Bee on the Pacific Rim Street Festival a vendor who was selling paper parasols. I'm interested in contacting the vendor (David Rogers) to purchase parasols for our daughter's outdoor wedding in July. Can you help?
Pearl, Lincoln
DEAR PEARL: I checked the story, and the vendor's business wasn't listed, just his name. Wishing Well has several local stores. Both the downtown Sacramento and College Oak locations have parasols maybe not as big as you need. Online, Lunabazaar.com has about 50 different versions intended for outdoor use. Prices range from $7.50 to $21.50.
DEAR READERS: I wrote about gluten-free cosmetics last week and received several e-mails from local folks regarding celiac disease.
From Diane in Carmichael: She wrote to say there is a local support group for people with celiac disease. It's part of the national, nonprofit Celiac Sprue Association. The group meets 64 times a year in Sacramento, Davis, Folsom and Placerville, and offers tips on diet and other celiac-related concerns. The Web site is www.csaceliacs.org.
From Melanie in Sacramento: "I was happy to see you covering a question that involves living a gluten-free lifestyle," she says. Melanie recently opened a store in downtown Sacramento (3319 J St.) that carries gluten-free products. She also does specialty orders. Also, Gluten Free Specialty will host a gluten-free taste testing from 1 to 4 p.m. June 22 at the store. For more information: (916) 441-5199.
