Call to Readers: To express poetry in motion, try a haiku

Published: Thursday, Jul. 17, 2008 | Page 8E

Eppie's Great Race, dubbed the "World's Oldest Triathlon," deserves a literary form of its own. That's why we've created "tri-ku," a triathlon poem in the form of a haiku.

Here's one by Bee staff writer Carlos Alcalá. Submit one (or a couple) of your own by July 21, and we'll run our favorites in Outbound July 24. Send your tri-ku to calcala@sacbee.com.

Hint: The first line has five syllables, the second has seven and the last has five.

Eppie's Triathlon

First leg short, next long,

Last is short. Just like haiku,

Only sweatier.
