Athletes at Eppie's Great Race on July 19 racked up the miles, while our tri-ku writers racked up the poetic meter.

They e-mailed us dozens of haiku-like verses, the vast majority of which used the words "run, cycle, paddle."

Or "running, cycling, paddling." Or "run, paddle, ride."

That shouldn't be a surprise, since that's what Eppie's is all about, but writers had other creative ways to tackle the annual sweatfest on the American River Parkway, too. Here are some of our favorite Eppies tri-kus, beginning with our staffer's original.

First leg short, next long,

Last is short, just like haiku,

Only sweatier.

– Carlos Alcalá, Bee staff writer

Feet, pedals, paddles

the air of competition

the Great Race begins!

– Kimberly White, Sacramento

Slow time in water

– but now I'm in my element.

Pedal! Cover ground!

– Lyle Smith, Davis

Ironman has them swim.

For Eppie's, they paddle boats.

Swim in our air; Strokes!

– Walt Brown, Roseville

Our time-less river –

its old torrents can still beat

a worn human race

– Michelle Kunert, Sacramento

Crooked limbs I have

But my eyes will watch you soar

Feel the sunny day

–Angie Franco, Sacramento

Air smoky or clear

Eppie's Great Race is over

Hail to the winner(s)

– Rose Allen, Roseville

The brave run and sweat.

The wise sit in recliners

To the finish line.

– Frances Kakugawa, Sacramento

Eppie's race of three

Running, biking, paddling

Good for you, not me

– Kent Stodden, Fair Oaks

I flash in the sun

Burn cycle and fierce paddle

I gasp my victory

– Diane Greenberg, Carmichael
