Matthew Reinhart's pop-up book "Star Wars, A Pop-Up Guide to the Galaxy" (Scholastic, $32.99) is ostensibly for ages 7 and up. Way up.
In truth, it's for us adult kids bewitched by the sci-fi epic. Reinhart, in collaboration with Lucasfilm, has created a paper-engineering feat to mark the original movie's 30th anniversary this year. The book's intricacy will pull fans into hours of marveling at how the structures move and reliving the epic's signature moments.
The rather sophisticated text introduces the "Star Wars" worlds in short copy blocks next to their illustrations or pop-ups. This is no bedtime story, but an overview of the galaxy and its heroes and villains. Surprisingly, the first two big pop-ups - an Imperial Walker (a.k.a. AT-ATs, all terrain armored transports) and Rancor, the gargantuan beast in Jabba's cellar - are not from the first film but its sequels.
The next three pop-ups are truly 30 years old: Han Solo's illegally modified freighter the Millennium Falcon; the wonderfully eccentric spaceport cantina crammed with smugglers, bounty hunters and a towering Wookiee; and the lovable droids, R2D2 and C3PO. Finally, Darth Vader's pop-up (see illustration on the Ticket+ index, Page 3) shares info that reaches beyond the first film, but then we expect a guide to the Star Wars galaxy to enter the future. As the double spread rises, readers can peek into Vader's mask to see his burn-scared face.
Reinhart outdoes himself with 31 more mini-pop-ups tucked into 17 interior booklets that hinge open in the corners of the double pages. Each opens with a pop-up or two. Adults captured by the Force can always rationalize that they want to introduce "Star Wars" to a new generation.
