If you feel like a little hiking altitude, this is the time of year when you're better off thinking about going west for an outdoor outing rather than tempting winter fate by heading east up into the Sierra.
And there are few better weekends than this one to take a trek to the top of 3,849-foot Mount Diablo. The Contra Costa County high point is the scene of several organized hikes Saturday and the seventh annual Mount Diablo Trail Adventure on Sunday.
Included in the Sunday festivities are a marathon, a half-marathon, a 10K run, a 10K speed hike and an educational family hike that begins at Castle Rock Park in Walnut Creek. Participants in the family jaunt will climb fire roads up the slopes of Diablo and finish at Castle Rock.
Besides the spectacle of runners and hikers, organizers are offering live music before and after the competitions at Mount Diablo State Park.
But whether you pick Saturday, Sunday or another day to explore, be assured that Mount Diablo State Park and the surrounding area are a special place offering something for everybody – equestrians, runners, campers, bikers and hikers.
And if you can't get to the top under your own power, you can drive and fill your soul with fabulous 360-degree views that include – on a clear day – glimpses of the Pacific, the Sierra and the Central Valley.
