Field trips in the heart of the Pacific Flyway in Yolo County are among the activities during California Duck Days. Yolo Basin Foundation
Daffy and Donald aren't confirmed, but plenty of ducks and other wildlife will headline California Duck Days 2008, a family-friendly wetlands festival on Feb. 22 and 23.
Birders and other wildlife enthusiasts will converge on the Davis area and Saturday's main venue, the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters, for scheduled field trips and workshops. The area is in the heart of the Pacific Flyway.
Field trips have been organized to accommodate beginning to experienced birders. Among the field-trip topics are local birding for beginners, raptors of the Central Valley and the birds of the Cache Creek Nature Preserve. A "Mystery Bird Trip" will help participants sight birds of prey in Yolo County.
Better quack-quacking will be taught in the duck-calling workshop. Artists can learn a thing or two enrolling in a waterfowl drawing class, and crafty types should enjoy a session on building bird boxes.
Hands-on activities rule during California Duck Days. Try trout fishing in the wetlands pond or making duck decoys from tules, just as indigenous people did and still do.
The workshop schedule also includes a bat workshop, a bird dog demonstration and decoy painting.
Along with field trips and workshops, there will be demonstrations, raffles, educational booths, food, live music and the California Waterfowl Association's Duck Days Dinner at the Veterans Memorial Center in Davis (6 p.m. Saturday, $60 per person).
Proceeds from the dinner will help fund conservation and education on waterfowl and wetlands. For more information on Saturday night's dinner: (530) 662-2042.
