Coming to terms with rowing requires learning a lot of terms, like blade, shell, scull and the like.
You could do it on the Internet (www.usrowing.org/NewToRowing/ GlossaryofRowingTerms/index.aspx) or get some eyes-on, hands-on experience this summer at events beginning this weekend.
The Sacramento State Aquatic Center, 1901 Hazel Ave. in Gold River, plays host to the West Coast Conference Rowing Championships on Lake Natoma from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 2. Though the event is free, parking costs $5 to $7.
Then, the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships take place at the aquatic center beginning at 8 a.m. May 3 and 4. Admission is $5; parking is $5 to $7.
In subsequent weeks: the Southwest Junior Rowing Championships, May 10-11; Pacific Coast Rowing Championships, May 17; Pac-10 Rowing Championships, May 18; and the NCAA Women's National Rowing Championships, May 28-June 1.
If you'd like more details about competitions at the aquatic center, or if you'd like to learn to row during club and summer instruction periods, call (916) 278-2842 or visit www.sacstateaquaticcenter.com

Another option is to hook up with rowing instructors and clubs operating out of the Port of Sacramento in West Sacramento.
The River City Rowing Club, now in its 25th year, offers Learn To Row classes for both juniors (13-17) and adults (18 and over). The club has more than 200 members and is always looking for more, according to vice president and coach Bill Naddy.
The nine practices in each session are held over three weeks. They go for two hours and are structured to introduce new skills at each one. The sessions culminate in a race on the final day. Cost is $160. Registration is under way for morning sessions commencing June 14 and July 5, and one evening session starting June 25. A Junior Learn To Row program starts Aug. 4 and offers a two-week session, with practices from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Cost is expected to be $150.
In a press release, Naddy wrote that those who complete a session may join the novice team at the club. But he said the club welcomes anyone who wants to try rowing.
