1. "One of These Nights" by the Eagles. With Timothy B. Schmit's loping bass riff, Al Green-inspired falsetto vocals and Don Henley's rolling drum groove, the title track from the band's fourth album remains one of the most atmospheric No. 1 hits of the 1970s. The tight production by Bill Szymczyk creates a spare sound that defines other Eagles classics like "Witchy Woman" and "Hotel California."
2. "Goodbye Mr A" by the Hoosiers. Released just last year, this hook-laden homage to the Electric Light Orchestra's "Mr. Blue Sky" has received nonstop rotation on my iPod as of late. Driven by a pounding piano stomp and choice organ licks, lead singer Irwin Sparkes snidely decries the follies of a man (perhaps a teacher) who possesses "all the answers/ But no human touch." The song is the main track from the video game "FIFA 08" and was featured in the trailer for the hit film "Juno."
3. "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae. Some songs can put you in a good mood; others create a feeling of pure nirvana. "Put Your Records On" does the latter, creating a summer-breeze feeling with Rae's silky voice and a swirling arrangement of acoustic guitar, organ and horns. Like a great piece of art or a vintage movie, it enraptures one thoroughly and soothes the mind.
4. "Footsteps in the Dark" by the Isley Brothers. Although not upbeat like the Isley hits "It's Your Thing" and "That Lady," this beautifully crafted and gut-wrenching track is still one to put on repeat. The Isleys' timeless vocals are cradled by an indelible guitar riff, which accentuates the song's haunting themes of infidelity and lost love. Ice Cube sampled the song in his gangsta-rap classic "It Was a Good Day."
