Comedian and Oscar-nominated actress Lily Tomlin kicks off a star-studded fourth season for the 2008-09 Sacramento Speakers Series.

In addition to Tomlin, who will be here Sept. 24, the scheduled lecturers are: "The Joy Luck Club" author Amy Tan (Oct. 15); investigative journalists and authors ("All the President's Men") Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein (Jan. 14); medical talk show host Dr. Dean Edell (Feb. 4); political pundit and author Cokie Roberts (March 31); humorist and newspaper columnist Dave Barry (April 27); and Middle Eastern religion scholar Reza Aslan (May 14).

Subscription tickets go on sale today to the general public, at $205 to $415 for the entire seven-event series.

"We're excited to bring more cultural opportunities to the Sacramento entertainment landscape," says Andy Eppinger, general manager of the West Sacramento-based Society of Orators.

"I think people enjoy the diversity. We poll our subscribers every season and try to bring as many of their favorites as we can. Five of these are speakers the Sacramento community is requesting. And what's different about this lecture series is that the speakers aren't on a national book tour or on a speakers' circuit, they're coming here just to speak to the Sacramento community."

In the past, the Speakers Series has brought in such notables as comedians Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby, political power couple Mary Matalin and James Carville, astronaut Sally Ride, actor Richard Dreyfuss and former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.

About 400 subscriptions for the 2008-09 season were made available after sales ended for regular series subscribers.

All lectures begin at 8 p.m. and are held at the Community Center Theater, 1301 L St.
