The city of Sacramento continues to have the highest violent crime rate in the county, though crime has dropped sharply there during the past two years. Folsom has consistently been the safest city in the region. Citrus Heights and Elk Grove just started their own police force, so their numbers are combined with sheriff's department statistics for most of these years.

Placer and El Dorado communities have generally enjoyed some of the lowest crime rates in the region, with the exception of South Lake Tahoe. However, during the past year, crime has increased in unincorporated Placer County and Rocklin.

Violent crime is dropping across Yolo County. Still, West Sacramento has a high crime rate compared to both Yolo County and the region as a whole.

Marysville has a crime problem, and it's getting worse faster than most anywhere else in the region. The other communities in Sutter and Yuba counties have relatively low rates of violent crime.
