Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger implored legislators to present him with a budget this week, a request unlikely to be granted given that one house was sent home Monday.
"I'm going to continue putting the pressure on them to let them know how important it is that we have a budget," the governor said during a tour of the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View. "I will continue doing everything I can to work with them, because I know it's very difficult, a lot of moving parts."
"But I think the legislators need to come together and present its budget proposal as quickly as possible. I hope that they're doing it this week, because the people of California deserve nothing less."
The Legislature missed a June 15 constitutional deadline for submitting a balanced budget. Democrats have proposed $8.2 billion in tax increases to help close the $15.2 billion deficit in the $101 billion general fund, but the plan has no support from GOP lawmakers.
On Monday:
Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata sent members home until there's a budget vote. Members were placed on a 24-hour notice to return to the Capitol.
The Senate and Assembly met to vote on items unrelated to the budget.
Legislative leaders from both parties met privately to discuss the tardy spending plan.
