Assembly Democrats announced a town hall meeting "to get Republicans to end their blockade of the state budget." The event is scheduled for July 29.
"Democrats, the governor and even many Republicans know that we can't solve the state's budget problems without creative, realistic, and compassionate solutions," Assembly Speaker Karen Bass said in the town hall announcement released Friday. "We've already cut more than $12 billion in the last three budgets. We just can't cut any more and still be the kind of California anyone would hope to live in."
According to the press release, Bass, D-Los Angeles, will join Assemblyman Warren Furutani, D-Gardena, at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Democrats and Republicans are at odds over how to close a $15.2 billion shortfall in the $101 billion general fund. The entire budget proposed by the Republican governor is $144 billion, including bond and special funds.
No meetings were held Friday between Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders.
No meetings were scheduled this weekend.
