A legislative committee today authorized audits of the California Highway Patrol and the Board of Chiropractic Examiners in response to recent stories in The Bee about irregularities in the two state operations.
The CHP audit is much narrower than initially proposed by state Sen. Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, and Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia, R-Cathedral City. It will focus on the CHP's use of state equipment, including aircraft, and examine the department's contracting and purchasing. The audit is expected to take about four months.
The Bee has written several stories in the past year about questionable contracting for guns, helicopters, motorcycles and other items.
The examination of the board that regulates chiropractors will take about seven months, State Auditor Elaine Howle said. It will look into the board's enforcement, licensing and continuing education programs, with an emphasis on the oversight and discipline of the state's 15,000 or so chiropractors.
The board was plunged into controversy in March when a new majority appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger fired the executive director without proper notice, kicked out a deputy attorney general assigned as its legal representative, and endorsed a chiropractic procedure that was the subject of a criminal prosecution in San Joaquin County.
