At a closed committee meeting Tuesday in Los Angeles, University of California regents will consider a proposal to increase their top executives' pay by 33 percent over the next four years. This year, the initial pay increases would range from 13 percent to 17 percent for the chancellors at the UC's 10 campuses.
The full Board of Regents is expected to vote on the pay raises Thursday at their regular meeting held at UCLA.
For UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgenau, a 33 percent increase would hike his current $416,000 annual salary to $553,280. For UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef, the increase would raise his current $300,000 annual salary to $400,000.
The raises are necessary, according to a spokesman for UC President Robert Dynes, to retain and recruit good chancellors.
But critics of the proposal, noting that the state is facing a tight budget this year, say the timing and tone of the raises is wrong.
Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, a UC regent, pointed out that the pay hikes would come the same year that the university has increased student fees by 7 percent.
"I am really astounded that the administration would propose a salary increase of this size to the highest paid executives in the entire system," Garamendi said in an interview Monday.
