Running or not? Doolittle to speak today

His aides aren't talking about whether he will seek a 10th term.

Amid speculation that he will not run for re-election, embattled U.S. Rep. John Doolittle has scheduled a news conference today in Roseville.

Representatives of the nine-term Republican declined to provide details on what Doolittle will say at the 10:30 a.m. session scheduled for the Maidu Community Center.

Employees at Doolittle's office in Granite Bay locked their doors to the public and met for a staff meeting Wednesday morning that lasted just under an hour. Doolittle did not attend.

The congressman's chief of staff, Ron Rogers, would not discuss the topic of the meeting, nor would two men who left the office after the session broke up discuss it.

"We had a staff meeting," Rogers said. "We're not going to discuss what happened in a staff meeting. It would be inappropriate."

Earlier this week, Doolittle sent some of his backers in his Northern California district an invitation to attend a briefing and told them that his wife, Julie, would attend.

The briefing is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. today, followed by a 10:30 a.m. press conference on Doolittle's election intentions.

Doolittle and his wife have been under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice in connection with their relationship with imprisoned former lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The FBI raided the Doolittles' Virginia home last April.

Despite serving in a heavily Republican district, Doolittle barely beat back the challenge of his Democratic opponent, Charlie Brown, in 2006 and since then has been under pressure from some GOP leaders to give up his House seat.
