WASHINGTON Congressional Democrats signaled Thursday that they are not giving up on capturing California's heavily Republican 4th Congressional District seat after scandal-tarred Republican Rep. John Doolittle's announcement last week that he will not seek a 10th term.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee listed the 4th District among 10 open seats now held by Republicans where it will pour time and money. Charlie Brown, who came within three points of beating Doolittle in 2006, is the only announced candidate for the Democratic nomination.
"Charlie Brown is a formidable candidate who has built an outstanding grass-roots campaign made up of voters of all political stripes," DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen said of the retired Air Force officer.
Many Republicans had urged Doolittle to drop out of the race because of fear his embroilment in the ongoing Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal would cost the party a safe seat. Since that announcement, former state Sen. Rico Oller, R-San Andreas, announced for the Republican nomination and former Sacramento U.S. Rep. Doug Ose said he might get into it, too.
Republicans of River City, describing itself as one of the largest volunteer Republicans organizations in the congressional district, announced Thursday that it had voted unanimously to urge Ose to jump into the contest.
