Pineapple Express
3 stars
Who says stoners lack motivation? In this comedy- action film, Dale and Saul (Seth Rogen, left, and James Franco, above) run, jump, fight and commandeer police cars in between taking hits. Of course, they only do these things because they're on the run from killers. Written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg from an idea by dude-comedy impresario Judd Apatow, "Pineapple Express" plays as an extension of the team's last comedy odyssey, "Superbad." Except this film contains lots of violence and a lead character more likable than any of the kids in "Superbad." Rated R
Righteous Kill
1 1/2 stars
Christy Lemire of the Associated Press writes: It's not that this crime thriller is spectacularly awful. It's just thoroughly mediocre a standard police procedural, unremarkable except for the pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino (left). Under the pseudo-flashy direction of Jon Avnet, De Niro and Pacino play geriatric New York police detectives on the trail of a serial killer, a vigilante who takes out bad guys who have it coming. Rated R
The Wackness
2 1/2 stars
A.O. Scott of the New York Times writes: Writer-director Jonathan Levine makes a good-faith effort to steer clear of clichés , and his movie succeeds and fails in roughly equal measure. To attempt a story like this about a young man's sexual initiation, heartbreak and disillusionment with the adult world that he is about to enter is to sacrifice a degree of novelty. Levine tries to compensate with a combination of historical authenticity and low-key emotional sincerity. Josh Peck, left, plays the young man. Rated R
