The Simpsons Movie
Fox Home Entertainment, $29.98, rated PG-13
No doh about it the first feature-length film based on Matt Groening's characters has all the humor of the long-running TV series with the addition of many more minutes for Homer Simpson to act stupidly and hilariously. The plot has something to do with a major ecological disaster befalling Springfield, with Homer both the cause and the possible savior. Bonus features include several audio commentaries by the creators, producers, the director, vocal cast members and others, deleted scenes and a series of funny promotional spots such as "Homer's Monologue on The Tonight Show" and "The Simpsons Judge American Idol."
The Mod Squad: Series 1, Vol. 1
Four discs, CBS/Paramount Home Entertainment, $42.99, not rated
Narcs have never been more hip than in this ABC series from 1968, in which the network tried to appeal to young people by having three stereotypical representatives of the late '60s counterculture a long-haired rich kid (Michael Cole), an angry young man from Watts (Clarence Williams III) and a flower child (Peggy Lipton) star as undercover agents. In addition to the series' first 13 episodes, the DVD set includes an inside look at the pilot episode and two short features, "Forming the Squad" and "Friends of the Mod Squad."
Once
Fox Home Entertainment, $29.98, rated R
One of the sleeper hits of the year, writer-director John Carney's terrific low-budget musical is about a Dublin street musician (Glen Hansard, Carney's former mate in the real-life band the Frames) and a Czech immigrant (Marketa Irglova) who write and record songs together. It's also a thoughtful and realistic love story of a sort complicated by Irglova's character's "responsibilities." The R rating evidently because of a few f-bombs is ridiculous. The DVD includes both film and musical commentaries by Carney, Hansard and Irglova, two documentaries about the moviemaking process, a free music download and selected webisodes.
