Seven things to do this weekend

Published: Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 4TICKET

SUNDAY

Fundraising Event

National Feral Cat Day 5K Walkathon

What: In just seven years, one female cat, her mate and all of their kittens can produce 470,000 offspring. Luckily, the Coalition for Community Cats keeps Sacramento's feral cat population under control by providing low-cost spay and neuter surgery, vaccinations and wound treatments for abandoned and wild felines. Sunday is National Feral Cat Day, and participation in the CCC's 5K Walkathon will help tame Sacramento's urban jungle.

When: Registration at 8 a.m., walk begins at 9 a.m.

Where: Southside Park, Sixth and T streets, Sacramento

Cost: $20

Info: (916) 446-4290 or www.coalition4cats.org

Concert

Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano with Eugenia León

What: Mexican singing sensation Eugenia León did for Latin America's New Song Movement what Bob Dylan did for American music at around the same time in music history. See the boundary-pushing superstar perform alongside Mondavi Center favorite Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano. The 2009 Grammy Award-winning mariachi ensemble, composed of fine musicians from Mexico and the United States, has been perfecting its complicated, intricate musical arrangements for nearly 44 years.

Info: (866) 754-2787 or www.mondaviarts.org

SATURDAY

Festival

Auburn Wine & Food Festival

What: Wineries and restaurants from in and around Placer County pair up to showcase their finest vino and edibles at the annual Wine and Food Festival, held Saturday in Downtown and Old Town Auburn. It's a good idea to show up early and grab a bite before you start the tour, which winds through 25 different venues. Each venue will be hosting a different winery and restaurant, and a free shuttle bus will make frequent runs through the loop.

When: 11 a.m.-6 p.m.

Where: Downtown and Old Town Auburn (Check-in at Placer County Courthouse, 101 Maple St., Auburn)

Performance Art

Cashore Marionettes – Simple Gifts

What: Award-winning puppeteer Joseph Cashore and his magical marionettes take the Mondavi stage this weekend, and audiences will be mesmerized by the performance's lifelike intensity. A series of funny and candid moments, inspired by everyday life, are transformed into a collection of marionette masterworks, set to music by such composers as Beethoven, Vivaldi and Copland. Cashore's delightful sense of irony – that puppets may instruct humans in the beauty of life – will charm both the young and the old.

When: 7 p.m. today, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Where: Studio Theatre, Mondavi Center, 9399 Old Davis Road, Davis

Cost: $15-$30

Info: (866) 754-2787 or www.mondaviarts.org

TODAY & SATURDAY

Theater

'Dracula'

What: The season of fearsome fangs and nebulous night creatures is upon us. For your annual "Dracula" dosage, look no further than the sleepy and mysterious town of Volcano. Amador County's Volcano Theatre Company presents a wickedly suspenseful take on Bram Stoker's classic macabre tale, and if the story alone doesn't send shivers down your spine, the theater's intimate, remote location is sure to do the job. Through Nov. 14, but seats for the Oct. 30 performance have all but vanished.

When: 8 p.m. today and Saturday

Where: Volcano Theatre, 16121 Main St.,Volcano

Cost: $15

Info: (209) 296-2525 or www.volcanotheatre.org

SUNDAY

Live Music

The Legendary Rhythm & Blues Revue

What: The 30th anniversary celebration of "Blues on the Green" boasts such a good lineup, it's bound to sell out. That's no surprise considering the all-ages event is organized by head jazz honchos at Capital Public Radio and emceed by Mick Martin, local bluesman and host of KXJZ's "Mick Martin's Blues Party." Bring your picnic accoutrement and snuggle up to the Tommy Castro Band, Janiva Magness, Kenny Neal, John Németh and special guest Terry Hanck.

When: 2 p.m.; doors open at 1 p.m.

Where: Capital Public Radio, 7055 Folsom Blvd., Sacramento

Cost: $25 advance; tickets available at Capital Public Radio, R5 Records (Broadway and 16th streets, Sacramento) and at www.inticketing.com

Info: (916) 278-8900 or www.capradio.org

ALL WEEKEND

Theater

'Noises Off'

What: In theater, it's never easy to orchestrate a tumble down a staircase. But in this classic British play-within-a-play, physical snafus are the seeds of hilarity, and with 17 false entrances, seven slamming doors and 46 miscues, you'll be laughing through the entire comedy of errors. "Noises Off" isn't an easy production to pull off, but the huge talent and practiced skill of the acclaimed Sacramento Theatre Company make this production a must-see. Through Nov. 1.

When: 8 p.m. today and Saturday, 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Where: Sacramento Theatre Company Mainstage, 1419 H St., Sacramento

Cost: $15-$44

Info: (916) 443-6722 or www.sactheatre.org
