Seven things to do this weekend

Published: Friday, Oct. 23, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 4TICKET

SATURDAY

Comedy

Dane Cook

What: The Dane Cook phenomenon roars on. Now a star of the big-screen variety, Cook got his golden ticket with his double-platinum "Retaliation" CD, the highest-charting comedy album in 28 years. Saturday, he'll unleash material from his latest album, "ISolated INcident," on Sacramentans, and you can bet there'll be at least a few poop jokes in the process.

When: 8 p.m.

Where: Arco Arena, One Sports Parkway, Sacramento

Cost: $32.50- $102.50, plus $12 parking

Info: (916) 928-6900 or www.arcoarena.com

SATURDAY

Dance

'Peter and the Wolf'

What: Children will love this Sacramento Ballet event, a Ron Cunningham-choreo- graphed performance of "Peter and the Wolf," narrated by Capital Public Radio's Jeffrey Callison. After the show, kids can shake the ants out of their pants with a lineup of interactive activities, including the Sacramento Zoomobile's friendly animal visits, Fairytale Corner and photo opportunities with Sacramento Ballet dancers.

SATURDAY

Classical music

Emerson String Quartet

What: The Emerson String Quartet's list of achievements has, without doubt, made four mothers very proud. In three decades the four have produced 30 acclaimed recordings, won eight Grammy Awards and collaborated with some of the greatest artists of our time. Called "America's Greatest Quartet" by Time magazine, it will storm the Mondavi Center stage Saturday, performing selections from Schubert, Shostakovich and Dvorák.

When: 8 p.m.

Where: Mondavi Center, Mrak Hall Drive at Old Davis Road, Davis

Cost: $35-$65

Info: (530) 754-2787 or www.mondaviarts.org

SUNDAY

Fundraising event

The Big Nosh

What: Presented by the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region, this edible crawl eats and drinks its way through midtown and downtown Sacramento to benefit a variety of charities, including Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Join a team or create one of your own, then enjoy a full day of indulging at local restaurants, breweries and coffee shops like Beach Hut Deli, L Wine Lounge, Rubicon Brewing Co., Aioli Bodega Restaurant, Old Soul Co. and Yogurtagogo. You'll see live music along the path, and all that walking will cancel out the excess calories – or so we'd prefer to believe.

When: Noon-5 p.m.

Where: Various locations, midtown and downtown Sacramento

Cost: $36

Info: (916) 993-3949 or www.bignosh.com

SATURDAY

Fundraising event

Reigning Cats & Dogs Gala

What: The Reigning Cats & Dogs Gala, now in its 23rd year, is a must-do for animal lovers looking to get some bang for their donated bucks. Benefiting the Sacramento SPCA, the 1960's-themed gala features food from more than 60 restaurants, wineries and breweries, plus entertainment from the Indestructibles and a performance of songs from the musical "Hair" (a substance that is sure to be found on many of the guests' jackets). Silent and public auctions include fancy goodies and vibrant four-legged artwork by Nikki Solone of Pet PawTraits.

When: 6:30-10 p.m.

Where: Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J St., Sacramento

Cost: $69

Info: (916) 383-7387, ext. 9102 or www.sspca.org

ALL WEEKEND

Physical theater

'Elephant's Graveyard'

What: Sideshow Physical Theatre, the resident professional company of the University of California, Davis' Department of Theatre & Dance, explores new performance forms that merge text, dance, video and film. This multimedia vessel delivers thought- provoking, intellectually stimulating productions that can't easily be classified as theater or dance alone. "Elephant's Graveyard," its latest production, explores the ancient themes of old age and dying, all with an artful and modern finesse.

When: 8 p.m. today and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday

Where: Studio Theatre, Mondavi Center, Mrak Hall Drive at Old Davis Road, Davis

Cost: $30

Info: (530) 754-2787 or www.theatredance.ucdavis.edu

Musical theater

'Tick, Tick … BOOM'

What: Theatrical new kids on the block New Helvetia Theatre offer up another modern gem in "Tick, Tick … BOOM," a story about the terrifying moment when professional artists ask, "What am I doing with my life?" Created by composer Jonathan Larson before he made "Rent," this partially autobiographical tale reminds us to pursue our dreams, even when obstacles tell us to get desk jobs. When: 8 p.m. today, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Through Nov. 14.

Where: Artisan Theatre, 1901 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento

Cost: $12-$20

What You Should Know About Comments on Sacbee.com

Sacbee.com is happy to provide a forum for reader interaction, discussion, feedback and reaction to our stories. However, we reserve the right to delete inappropriate comments or ban users who can't play nice. (See our full terms of service here.)

Here are some rules of the road:

• Keep your comments civil. Don't insult one another or the subjects of our articles. If you think a comment violates our guidelines click the "report abuse" button to notify the moderators. Responding to the comment will only encourage bad behavior.

• Don't use profanities, vulgarities or hate speech. This is a general interest news site. Sometimes, there are children present. Don't say anything in a way you wouldn't want your own child to hear.

• Do not attack other users; focus your comments on issues, not individuals.

• Stay on topic. Only post comments relevant to the article at hand. If you want to discuss an issue with a specific user, click on his profile name and send him a direct message.

• Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.

• Don't use all capital letters. That's akin to yelling and not appreciated by the audience.

You should also know that The Sacramento Bee does not screen comments before they are posted. You are more likely to see inappropriate comments before our staff does, so we ask that you click the "report abuse" button to submit those comments for moderator review. You also may notify us via email at feedback@sacbee.com. Note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us the profile name of the user who made the comment. Remember, comment moderation is subjective. You may find some material objectionable that we won't and vice versa.

If you submit a comment, the user name of your account will appear along with it. Users cannot remove their own comments once they have submitted them, but you may ask our staff to retract one of your comments by sending an email to feedback@sacbee.com. Again, make sure you note the headline on which the comment is made and tell us your profile name.
