Seven things to do this weekend

Published: Friday, Jul. 3, 2009 - 12:00 am | Page 4TICKET

ALL WEEKEND

Exhibit

Carved Elegance: Woodies, Wheels and Waves

What: Surfing buffs and retro-design junkies will drool over this new exhibit at the California Auto Museum. The woody is a classic automobile design, an iconic body style that has characterized station wagons, minivans and, most notably 'round these parts, California surf-mobiles. Check out the museum's totally radical collection of wood-paneled cars and escape to your beach- bum memories of summertime past.

When: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (last admission at 5 p.m.), through Sept. 19

Where: California Auto Museum, 2200 Front St., Sacramento

Cost: $4-$8, free for children under 5

Information:

(916) 442-6802 or www.calautomuseum.org

TODAY

Live music

Secretions CD release show

What: Hungry? How about some "Greasy- hotmeatcheezy" to tempt your palate? That's the name of the new album from the Secretions, the legendary Sacramento punk band that's been inducing whiplash and building the local music circuit for more than 18 years. So what's their secret to longevity? Plain and simple, the boys put on one fun show. Tonight, help them celebrate the release of their carnivorous new album along with bands Red Tape, A Single Second and the Phantom Jets.

When: 9 p.m.

Where: Blue Lamp Lounge, 1400 Alhambra Blvd., Sacramento

Cost: $7

Information: www.bluelamp.com

TODAY AND SUNDAY

Theater

'Variations on Betrayal: An Allegory for Five Colorful Clowns'

What: Betrayal and clowns. Somehow, in this head-turning play, the two go together like cream pies and happy faces. The crooked story of Benedict Arnold is refashioned through a similarly corrupt modern lens, drawing parallels between the classic American villain and the corporate politicking and exploitation of our day and age. Here's the punch line: Five hilarious clowns will guide you through this circus.

When: 8 p.m. today, 2 p.m. Sunday; through July 19

Where: Wilkerson Theatre, 1713 25th St., Sacramento

Cost: $15 (reservations recommended)

Information:

SATURDAY

Athletic event

Folsom Firecracker Family Fun Run

What: The best way to kick off your Fourth of July celebration is to do a little disaster prevention – namely, you must burn off some extra calories to accommodate that homemade apple pie. This family-oriented 5K and 10K run/walk event celebrates our nation's independence by giving back to local nonprofit organizations and less fortunate communities around the world. A scenic jaunt through Folsom's gorgeous Lake Natoma Trails will get your metabolism pumping early, and it will also help put an end to world hunger.

When: 8 a.m.

Where: Lake Natoma Trails; race starts at 145 Parkshore Drive, Folsom

Cost: $25 (advance registration encouraged, check event Web site for details)

Information: www.folsomfirecracker.com

SATURDAY- SUNDAY

Food

Sacramento Wine & Dine

What: For foodies, Sacramento is a fenceless playground – assuming you've got the cash to play. If the closest you've gotten to eating at Mulvaney's is catching a whiff from the 19th Street sidewalk, now is your time to move. Saturday through July 12, enjoy discounted three- and four-course prix fixe menus at the 40-plus restaurants in the third annual event.

When: Check restaurants for hours

Where: Various locations

Cost: $30 and up, depending on the restaurant

Information: www.sacramentowineanddine.com

TODAY-SATURDAY

Sporting event

Folsom Pro Rodeo

What: Now in its 49th year, the colorful Folsom Pro Rodeo has earned its keep in the Wild West, attracting bucking broncos and charming cowboys to compete for rodeo glory every summer. Celebrate the fabric of American history by feasting your eyes on classic rodeo events like barrel racing, bull riding and mutton busting. The rodeo also offers carnival rides, food, live entertainment and a nightly, in-arena fireworks display.

• Do not copy and paste outside material into the comment box.

• Don't repeat the same comment over and over. We heard you the first time.

• Do not use the commenting system for advertising. That's spam and it isn't allowed.
