  • 173 Yosemite Falls color
The color of the black cottonwoods along the Merced River in front of Yosemite falls is turning color. The light dusting of snow last night might bring water back to the falls in a day or two. It has been over a month sine the falls has had any water. This photo was made on November 9, 2012, 2012. 173

  • 174 Yosemite Snow
Last night’s snowfall has given a magical appearance to the trees in Yosemite Valley. The fall foliage is great but it is uncertain how badly it will affect the condition of the leaves. My guess is that most of the leaves will freeze and fall in a couple days. Get here now if you want snow and fall colors. This photo was made on November 9, 2012, 2012. 174

  • 175 Yosemite View
Last night Yosemite Valley received between one and two inches of snow making for an early morning spectacle of white and brilliant fall foliage. The fall colors in the valley are at their peak right now and the sight of all tree species turning at the same time hasn’t happened in well over 10 years. Everything is pointing to a grand weekend of color and snow photography. This photo was made on November 9, 2012, 2012. 175

  • 163 El Cap Meadow
The oaks in El Capitan meadow are impressive with brilliant yellow and orange colors. The weather this weekend may have a significant affect on the leaves. A lot of snow will strip the leaves from the trees. This photo was made on November 8, 2012. 163

  • 169 Best year for color
This is a very special year for color in Yosemite. Special because usually the various species of trees turn at different times making broad vistas of color nearly impossible to make at one time. This year is different. All the trees in every meadow and along all the roads are turning at the same time. You can’t miss this special show of color. This photo was made on November 8, 2012, 2012. 169

  • 162 Bishop Park Crop
The foliage is still going strong in the lower canyons of Bishop Creek. You won’t need to go beyond Aspendell or South Fork Bishop Creek to fill you memory cards. Most shots are best with morning light. The only food in the canyons now is the café at Cardinal Resort in Aspendell. The trees around the pond are dropping leaves but might still make a good shot. Enjoy the last color of the year. This shot is from a hill at Bishop Park. This photo was made on October 18, 2012. 162

  • 158 Misty Falls
Misty Falls along the South Fork Bishop Creek couldn’t be better. You could walk up to the falls until 2005 when the house was built. Now we have to enjoy it with a long lens. This photo was made on October 18, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 70-200mm zoom lens at 100mm. The exposure was 1/6 sec. at f/22 using ISO 100 and a polarizing filter. • 154 Leaf Collage
This collage of leaves is pretty to see and photograph but they are also an indication that the color is coming down quickly. If you want to shoot beautiful scenes in the Sierra, you need to do it this weekend. This photo was made on October 18, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 105mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/11 using ISO 1000 and a polarizing filter. For more information on lighting, exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 154

  • 151 Walker Color
This row of cottonwoods is not typical of the color in the Antelope Valley but the trees are turning earlier than normal. My prediction was good color this year with a shorter season. If the cottonwoods continue to turn at this rate here, and in Bishop, they will be a week earlier than normal. This photo was made on October 17, 2012. 151

  • 155 Leaf Carpet
Autumn is a wonderful spectacle. The end of this color cycle is a carpet of color. This last for a few days and then they become mulch for the soil. This photo was made on October 18, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 24mm. The exposure was 1/180 sec. at f/11 using ISO 1000 and a polarizing filter. • 157 Mountain Glen
Mountain Glen has some very saturated color right now. Shoot it if you can this weekend. My guess is that the color all along Bishop Creek will be almost gone by next weekend. Small patches will be here but not much. This photo was made on October 18, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 28mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/13 using ISO 1000 and a polarizing filter. For more information on lighting, exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 157

  • 159 A Touch of Red
Just a touch of red in these aspen trees surrounded by orange, yellow and light green leaves. The neutral gray of the ground is a complimenting color. There’s good color in Four Jeffrey area of Bishop Creek. This photo was made on October 18, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 105mm. • 150 Bishop Park
Color may be at its peak elsewhere in the Eastern Sierra but Bishop is still king (at least for this week). You won’t need to go past Aspendell or South Fork Bishop Creek to get fantastic color. Beyond these points, the leaves have fallen. For now, the color here is great. Get it this weekend because it won’t last until next weekend. Bishop Creek has been good to us this year. I can’t wait for next year. Enjoy your travels to all our sites and drive safely. This photo was made on October 17, 2012. 150

  • 149 Laws Museum Train Station
The Laws museum in Bishop is perfect for the photographer looking for variety in their fall foliage shooting. Why not mix in a little of the Old West too. The train station is perfect for digital cameras that have an HDR in-camera processing feature. Here I used 2-stop bracketing and Art Vivid mode to blend the harsh highlights and dark shadows. This HDR composite photo was made on October 17, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 32mm. The exposure was 1/125 sec. at f/6.7 using ISO 1000. • 147 Miners cabin at night
Here’s a shot of the miner’s cabin after sunset using three Canon 600 RT speedlites to illuminate the two rooms of the cabin. I gelled the speedlites with orange filters to simulate the warm light eminating from oil lamps or candles used in that era. This photo was made on October 17, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 24mm. The exposure was 1/4 sec. at f/11 using ISO 6400. • 145 Night in Laws Museum
The Laws Museum at night is special. With only a single streetlight the scene becomes very moody. I used three Canon RT radio speedlites to illuminate the three garage interiors at the right for added detail. This photo was made on October 17, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 24mm. The exposure was 30 sec. at f/11 using ISO 1600. • 148 Miners Cabin Interior
This interior of a miner’s cabin at the Laws Museum in Bishop, is rich with detail but also with harsh shadows. I decided to us the in-camera HDR processing feature to overcome the wide range of exposure densities. This HDR composite photo was made on October 17, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 16-35mm zoom lens at 17mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/11 using ISO 3200. • 123 Sunrise Silver Lake
This sunrise at Silver Lake on the June Lake Loop Road shows how intense the color is in this area. With no wind or fishermen, the lake is like a mirror. I used a one-stop graduated neutral density filter to hold back the top half of the photo at the waterline so the reflection would be the same density as the top half of the photo. This photo was made on October 17, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom lens at 28mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/16 using ISO 1600 with a grad and polarizing filter. • 105 Yosemite Maple
Ironically, the only tree turning now in Yosemite is the maple tree across from the chapel. Ironic in that it is not natural to the valley but brought in by settlers. • 093 Canopy sun star
I love canopy shots especially where the trees are full height and not scrub growth. For interest I sometimes add a sun star to the image. Sun stars are created when the sun is carefully positioned trough some branches and using the smallest aperture on your lens. This photo was made on October 9, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 16-35mm zoom set to 17mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/22 using ISO 1000 and a polarizing filter. Reflections are very popular with photo enthusiasts. They are easy to make but the most vivid ones are made where the water is in shadows. It almost becomes a mirror image of the subject. • 092 Table Mountain Meadow
Table Mountain Meadow is one of my favorite areas to shoot fall foliage. I like the light best before 10 a.m. This vantage point requires a lot of bushwhacking to get to the top of the hill but it is well worth the view if the trees are in full color. This photo was made on October 9, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom set to 28mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/11 using ISO 1000 and a polarizing filter. • 085 June Loop Green
The color along the June Lake Loop Road is primarily green. I think the color will peak in this area around Oct 17 unless high winds come through the area. This week’s rain shouldn’t affect the trees. This photo was made on October 8, 2012. 085

  • 087 Silver Lake Autumn
Autumn falls around the June Lake Loop, later than other areas in the Eastern Sierra. Don’t be deceived by the color here at Silver Lake, as the entire area is mostly green still. • 084 Rush Creek Color
The nice part about shooting fall colors is you can always find something to shoot. If everything turned at the same time, you’d only have a week to catch them. The small amount of color along Rush Creek on the June Lake Loop gives us something to shoot now. In a week the color will still be turning on the trees that are currently green. This photo was made on October 8, 2012. 084

  • 086 Silver Lake HDR
With the sun setting to the west, Silver Lake only has soft ambient light. The difference in light values between the lake and sun illuminated clouds is about six exposure stops. • 081 Back Bay Lundy
The Back Bay at Lundy is a mile beyond the Beaver Ponds. As you can see the trees here are beginning to turn nicely. My guess is that the color in this area will peak mid-week Oct 17. I don’t think the rains this week will affect the trees very much. This photo was made on October 8, 2012. 081

  • 073 Antelope Valley
The color in Antelope Valley is still a couple weeks away. Traditionally, the color of the cottonwoods usually comes the last week of October. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to shoot it this year because I will be teaching a photo workshop for Canon in Arches National Park. Composition is a subject that puzzles many photographers. Framing a subject sets the mood of the photo. Workshops are a great way to learn your camera and be with others that are out to do the same thing. Early morning star photography, sunrises and sunsets and everything in between make for a congenial learning experience.

  • 043 Lake Sabrina Island
Lake Sabrina was an early bloomer this year. The color is already peak and will be in significant decline by next weekend. The lake is being drained so there is little water in it. Note the high crop line I gave it to give the feeling of a full lake. This photo was made on September 29, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom set to 47mm. The exposure was 1/125 sec. at f/13 using ISO 800 with a Polarizing filter. For more information on lighting, exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 043

  • 046 Aspen Canopy
Variety adds interest to a photo shoot. Many landscapes suffer from the boring straightforward eye-level approach. Try different angles looking up then, from a high position, looking downward. Also try adding different aperture or shutter techniques. This sun star makes the photo different. This photo was made on September 29, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 15mm fish-eye lens. The exposure was 1/350 sec. at f/22 using ISO 800. For more information on sun stars, lighting, exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 046

  • 044 Lake Sabrina bay
Normally the two islands in the foreground are surrounded by water so I cropped the photo by zooming in to give the illusion of a normal shoreline. The lake is being drained for dam repairs. This photo was made on September 29, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom set to 45mm. The exposure was 1/180 sec. at f/13 using ISO 800 with a Polarizing filter. • 048 Full Zoom Blur
Using the same technique as photo 47, I zoomed for the full range of the 24-105mm zoom lens during the 1/15 sec. exposure. I think this is a fun technique to add variety to your photo shoot. Too much of a good thing however, is too much of a good thing. 048

  • 047 Zoom Blur
One of my workshop attendees, Shakeel Tufail from Washington D.C. shared his zoom exposure technique with the class. Normally, we use this technique on existing light/night photos but it seems to have a nice effect shooting these trees. I used a Canon 24-105 zoom and only zoomed during the 1/15 sec exposure from 24 to 35mm thus giving some sharper trees for reference. Everybody learns something in a workshop. Thanks Shakeel.

  • 045 Photo Workshop
I taught a photo workshop this weekend and this is a few from our group getting a low angle for the best composition. Don’t be afraid to put your camera at different heights to vary your perspective. Your shoot at the end of the day needs to show a variety of high and low angles with a nice selection of verticals and horizontals. 045

  • 042 Dawn on North Lake
Dawn on North Lake can be exciting and frustrating because the scene is spectacular but the pre-dawn cold is made worse with a slight breeze. Just after sunrise the wind began to subside making this reflection possible. I used a two-stop graduated neutral density filter to bring the brighter top half of the scene into the same brightness range of the reflection. This photo was made on September 29, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 16-35mm zoom set to 24mm. The exposure was 1/500 sec. at f/11 using ISO 400 with a Polarizing filter and 2x GND. 042

  • 041 Willow Valley color
The aspens in willow valley along the south fork of Bishop Creek are perfect now. The color will hopefully last into the weekend of Oct 5. Half of the drive toward South Lake is still green so we’ll have color for some time. This photo was made on September 28, 2012 with a Canon 5D MkIII camera using a Canon 70-200mm zoom set to 105mm. The exposure was 1/20 sec. at f/11 using ISO 400 with no Polarizing filter. For more information on lighting, exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 041

  • 040 Bishop Grad Sunset
Sunsets are always filled with anticipation. A well-known photographer says that about ten percent actually work out. One way I try to salvage a sunset is to use a graduated neutral density filter. By exposing for the foreground the brighter top half of the photo is usually washed out. The graduated neutral density filter holds back the top half by bringing that density equal to the bottom half. I used a 3-stop graduated neutral density on this Bishop sunset. 040

  • 039 Bishop HDR Sunset
Sometimes sunsets are an almost impossible endeavor. In-camera HDR processing seems like a good idea because it allows multiple exposures to be combined to simulate the dynamic range of the human eye. The original images are saved, along with the HDR composite the camera produced. That allows the photographer to process the same composite images with HDR software such as NIK HDR Efex Pro 2 for a different effect. 039

  • 038 McGee Creek Canyon

The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/11 using ISO 1250 with Polarizing filter. For more information on lighting, exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 038
