The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is not a true delta, a place where a river fans out as it spills into the sea. Instead it's an estuary, an inland water body where ocean and fresh flows mingle, one of the world's richest ecosystem types. At 1,300 square miles it is about the size of Rhode Island and has 1,100 miles of levees.
