This Professional building located on Sunset Boulevard in Rocklin has an intriguing arrangement of liquidambar trees. The colors of these six perfectly placed trees was too much to pass up. Bray Vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley has the best color in the area. Combine that with great wine and you have the recipe for a fun day. Bring a lunch, lots of memory cards and some space in your trunk for wine. 222Bee/Dave Henry -

The reason a polarizing filter is the most used accessory in fall foliage photography is because it minimizes the reflection of the sky on each leaf on a tree and allows the color of that leaf to stand out. This comparison of the leaves on the maple at Bray Vineyards shows the color saturating effect the polarizing filter has on leaves. 220Bee/Dave Henry -
Heres another shot of the maple at Bray Vineyard but a close up version using the clear blue sky as a background. This photo was made November 10, 2011 using a Canon 5D MkII and a Canon 24-105 zoom lens set to 90mm. The exposure was 1/125 sec. at f/11 using ISO 400 with a polarizing filter. Due to a slight breeze, I moved the ISO to 1,600 to allow me to shoot the leaf at 1/250 sec. at f/4. The floor of the forest is covered with leaves from the big leaf maples that are the last remaining tree to drop its leaves. These leaves have created a carpeted trail that visitors can stroll along and enjoy the season. This is the last remaining color in Yosemite so enjoy it while you can. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 196Bee/Dave Henry -
The fallen leaves make a good backdrop for photographing at Fern Spring. It is located only a few hundred feet from Pohono Bridge as you enter Yosemite Valley. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 195Bee/Dave Henry -
The one good hope for oak tree color this year in Yosemite, will have to come from the oaks near the visitors center. It appears they are trying to turn and dont seem to have suffered the malady of prematurely loosing their leaves like all the other oak trees in the valley. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 194Bee/Dave Henry -

The infamous elm in Cooks Meadow has been the focal point for decades for photographers waiting for the back lighting from sunrise to illuminate the orange foliage. This year it has almost completed the season without turning color. The leaves have turned brown and have almost all fallen. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 192Bee/Dave Henry -
There are few oak trees that have turned this year. I found this lone tree in Cooks Meadow near the Visitors Center. You have to use the right lighting and a polarizing filter to bring out the color. The oaks and black cottonwoods were very disappointing this year because they dropped their leaves without turning color due to the storms in early October. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 191Bee/Dave Henry -
This is another of my favorite views for fall foliage. Unfortunately there isnt any water in Yosemite Falls or colored foliage on the trees. Wait until next year. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 190Bee/Dave Henry -
There is nice color to shoot in Yosemite, you just have to look for it. There is spotty color all around the park but an area full of color is only seen in the Fern Spring area after you cross the Pohono bridge. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 189Bee/Dave Henry -
The color is falling quickly in Yosemite. Especially with the snowstorm heading its way tomorrow. Compare this photo in Yosemite with photo number 166 made on October 22. There still is scattered color in the park but Hwy 41 toward Fresno has good color. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 188Bee/Dave Henry -
This is normally one of my favorite photos of the cottonwoods in bright yellow with side lighting. Something happened to them as well as the oaks which have completely lost their leaves early. This photo was made on November 3, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL zoom set to 47mm. The exposure was 1/125 sec. at f/13 using ISO 400. The color on the road leading to Lundy is trying to hold onto its color but that will be a difficult challenge with the snowstorm heading this way tomorrow. Thanks to this area for nice color and many memories for this season. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 186Bee/Dave Henry -
The trees at the beaver pond behind Lundy Lake have lost their leaves but I like the residual color here. I usually shoot this pond with a nice reflection but the 40-50 mph wind gusts have eliminated that compositional element. Compare this to photo number 135 from October 16. This photo was made on November 3, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL zoom set to 32mm. The exposure was 1/90 sec. at f/11 using ISO 400. For more information on exposure and filters, check our Tips and Techniques section. 185Bee/Dave Henry -
There is some residual color at Lundy Lake but that wont last through this weekend because of the upcoming snowstorm. It was a good year here. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 184Bee/Dave Henry -
The color here is almost gone. The color was good but my observation is that it has been better. Note the heavy wind lines in the water. The storm will strip remaining leaves off this weekend. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 183Bee/Dave Henry -
Conway Summit is hanging on by a thread. The color here was probably the best of the entire area this year and lasted longest. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 182Bee/Dave Henry -
You have to allow me this one indulgence in the gallery. Doesnt it look great! Ive been wanting to make this photo for years but never make the time. This is the reason Ive been stopping here all these years. Well, that and the hamburger. I had to have one last cone before they close. Jolly Kone will close for the season this Sunday for a well deserved winters vacation. See you next year. 181Bee/Dave Henry -

The approach to Conway Summit from the south is outstanding enough but when combined with dramatic side or back lighting it becomes electric. I ran into John Sexton and his partner, Charles Cramer teaching in the Conway Summit area today. I happened to run into them at the same place last year. Here, John is working with a student, Helen Myall from Australia. I love to see all the photography workshops in the Eastern Sierra over the last ten years. Before that there wasnt anyone. It gets lonely when youre shooting and theres no one to share the experience with. 109Bee/Dave Henry -
This is a shot of Charles Cramer instructing his student, John Aldrich from Salt Lake City, on composition and exposure. Charles and John Sexton are teaching this week in the area. 108Bee/Dave Henry -

078 When I began shooting this tree tunnel 32 years ago, it really wasnt much of a tunnel. Readers would chide me on calling it a tunnel whenever we ran a photo of it. Now it has grown into one. It reminded me of the tunnels I used to shoot in New England when I lived in New York in the early 70s. This photo was made on October 5, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL IS zoom set to 60mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400. 077 This is the west end of the first tree tunnel at the back of North Lake. Note the heavy boughs of snow on the aspens. The color was perfect the day before. Check yesterdays gallery photos. This photo was made on October 5, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL IS zoom set to 24mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400. 076 I loved watching the snow being blown from the ridges by the very high winds. Note the lava flow foliage covered with snow. This wont be good for the color that was just turning nicely. 075 North Lake has become iconic for me. It was wonderful to be there as the storm cleared. In 32 years of shooting this spot, it had never been there during the storm. This photo was made on October 5, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL IS zoom set to 24mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400. I woke up to a big snowstorm in the Sierra. The 9,000-foot level in Bishop Creek Canyon received about 7 inches of snow. Most of the aspen trees were bent over from the weight of the snow. I hurried to the end of the road so that I could be part of the action. My friend Bob and I were the only photographers around for most of the morning. Turns out, the 4WD was just what was needed. This photo was made on October 5, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL IS zoom set to 67mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/8 using ISO 400. The wash of color cascading down the mountainside is referred to as the Lava Flow. As you can see it is beginning to turn nicely. If the snow wasnt coming tomorrow, we might have a good chance at a decent color flow this year. At this altitude, the color that is appearing probably wont last very long before it dies.Bee/Dave Henry -

I like shooting foliage in the Sabrina Basin in ambient light. Thats the existing light left when the sun moves behind a mountain and leaves us the soft lighting and pastel colors. The colors in the Mountain Glen area (stop 19 on the map) is showing very saturated colors this year. Ive had numerous emails asking if Im juicing the saturation. I cant as I work for a paper and my photos have to be accurate. They must match what you would see if you visit the same site the next day. Otherwise it would bring the wrath of the color trolls down upon me. Lighten, darken, burn, dodge, contrast and crop are the only controls I can use.Bee/Dave Henry -
We got a brief rainbow this afternoon after numerous showers from a passing thunderstorm in the Bishop Creek area (stop 20 on the map). Color balance is always critical in color digital photography but more so when shooting fall foliage in ambient lighting. Auto white balance settings on digital cameras are pretty good but not perfect. I use the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport color calibration target. All I do is take a picture of the target in the same light as my subject, then use the white balance dropper tool in Lightroom and it balances my photo perfectly. It really takes the guess work out of post processing your images. Ill be using and demonstrating this tool this weekend during one of our photo workshops in Bishop. Email me if you have any questions. By the way, it folds up and fits in your shirt pocket.Bee/Dave Henry | ©Davehenryphoto.com -

Not everything has to be fall colors, right? Like I tell my workshop students, we shoot before dawn and after sunset and everything in between. This is a star trail photo.
