  • 220 Polarizing filter comparison
The reason a polarizing filter is the most used accessory in fall foliage photography is because it minimizes the reflection of the sky on each leaf on a tree and allows the color of that leaf to stand out. This comparison of the leaves on the maple at Bray Vineyards shows the color saturating effect the polarizing filter has on leaves. 220

  • 189 Pohono Color
There is nice color to shoot in Yosemite, you just have to look for it. There is spotty color all around the park but an area full of color is only seen in the Fern Spring area after you cross the Pohono bridge. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 189

The color is falling quickly in Yosemite. Especially with the snowstorm heading its way tomorrow. Compare this photo in Yosemite with photo number 166 made on October 22. This is normally one of my favorite photos of the cottonwoods in bright yellow with side lighting. Something happened to them as well as the oaks which have completely lost their leaves early. • 186 Lundy Road color
The color on the road leading to Lundy is trying to hold onto its color but that will be a difficult challenge with the snowstorm heading this way tomorrow. Thanks to this area for nice color and many memories for this season. This photo was made November 3, 2011. 186

  • 185 Beaver Pond Color
The trees at the beaver pond behind Lundy Lake have lost their leaves but I like the residual color here. I usually shoot this pond with a nice reflection but the 40-50 mph wind gusts have eliminated that compositional element. Compare this to photo number 135 from October 16. This photo was made on November 3, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL zoom set to 32mm. The exposure was 1/90 sec. at f/11 using ISO 400. You have to allow me this one indulgence in the gallery. Doesn’t it look great! I’ve been wanting to make this photo for years but never make the time. This is the reason I’ve been stopping here all these years. Well, that and the hamburger. I had to have one last cone before they close. Jolly Kone will close for the season this Sunday for a well deserved winter’s vacation. See you next year. 181

  • 075 North Lake Iconic
075 North Lake has become iconic for me. It was wonderful to be there as the storm cleared. In 32 years of shooting this spot, it had never been there during the storm. To watch it begin to clear was magical. It was cold and ice crystals were blowing and stinging my face. This photo was made on October 5, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using the Canon 24-105mmL IS zoom set to 24mm. The exposure was 1/250 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400. I woke up to a big snowstorm in the Sierra. The 9,000-foot level in Bishop Creek Canyon received about 7 inches of snow. Most of the aspen trees were bent over from the weight of the snow. The wash of color cascading down the mountainside is referred to as the Lava Flow. As you can see it is beginning to turn nicely. The colors in the Mountain Glen area (stop 19 on the map) is showing very saturated colors this year. I’ve had numerous emails asking if I’m “juicing” the saturation. I can’t as I work for a paper and my photos have to be accurate. They must match what you would see if you visit the same site the next day. Otherwise it would bring the wrath of the color trolls down upon me. Lighten, darken, burn, dodge, contrast and crop are the only controls I can use.

  • 021 Kavanaugh Ridge
Kavanaugh Ridge has great color and is off the Virginia Lakes Road at Conway Summit on Dunderberg Meadow Road. It is a class 1 dirt road but you only need to go about a mine and a half to get to the color. Beyond that the color isn’t any better. Park your car and start walking. You’ll love it. This photo was made on September 28, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using a Canon 24-105mm zoom set to 60mm. The exposure was 1/125 sec. at f/11 using ISO 400 with a Polarizing filter. • 019 Color Balance
Color balance is always critical in color digital photography but more so when shooting fall foliage in ambient lighting. Auto white balance settings on digital cameras are pretty good but not perfect. I use the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport color calibration target. All I do is take a picture of the target in the same light as my subject, then use the white balance dropper tool in Lightroom and it balances my photo perfectly. It really takes the guess work out of post processing your images. I’ll be using and demonstrating this tool this weekend during one of our photo workshops in Bishop. Email me if you have any questions. By the way, it folds up and fits in your shirt pocket.

  • 016 Star Trails
Not everything has to be fall colors, right? Like I tell my workshop students, we shoot before dawn and after sunset and everything in between. This is a star trail photo. The other night sky photo we sometimes take is referred to as star fields where the stars are pinpoints of light. Star trails show the earth’s rotation. This photo was made on September 27, 2011 with a Canon 5D MkII camera using a Canon 15mm fisheye lens. The exposure was 20 minutes at f/5.6 using ISO 400.
