Be drought-smart in garden

Confused about how to save water in your garden? Well-known landscape designer Roberta Walker will present two free seminars on drought-tolerant landscaping today at Emigh Hardware, 3555 El Camino Ave., Sacramento.

Featured in Sunset Magazine and HGTV's "Gardening by the Yard," Walker has developed design methods and an extensive plant palette for creating water-saving landscapes.

She's also an expert on how to make the transformation from lawn to no lawn with a low-maintenance, low-water landscape that also serves as a beautiful habitat for beneficial insects, butterflies and birds.

In conjunction with Walker's seminars, Emigh Hardware has devoted a major section of its garden center to drought- tolerant plants, including many from the UC Davis Arboretum All-Stars collection.

Agnes Lee Hang will demonstrate how to make colorful hanging planters during a free workshop at 10 a.m. today at Bushnell Gardens, 5255 Douglas Blvd., Granite Bay. Hang, who creates the many beautiful hanging baskets featured at Bushnell Gardens, will share her tricks for turning hanging baskets into visual treats. For more details, call (916) 791-4199.

Have a pot that may be worth gold? Find out Tuesday at Crocker Art Museum's Evaluation Day. Antiques experts Velta Duffield, Sylvia Fitzgerald and Gary Cox will conduct informal appraisals of American and European pottery, art, glass, ceramics and silver. Orchids galore

Learn about orchids today at Raley's, 8870 Madison Ave., Fair Oaks. Experts from Rocket Farms Growers will offer advice on identifying varieties of orchids, orchid care and tips on coaxing more blooms. Nearly 300 orchid plants including miltonia, dendrobium, oncidium and phalaenopsis varieties will be available for sale at discounted prices.

Pioneer garden workshop

Take part in the creation of a new community garden while learning what you need to know in your own yard at a special workshop from 9 a.m. to noon today at the Mollie Joyce House on Highway 88 in Pioneer.

The Amador County Cooperative Extension has teamed up with the Amador County Recreation Agency for this free workshop, which will include constructing a small garden, from fencing to planting and everything in-between.
