Six years ago when California was more concerned about flu outbreaks than budget deficits, the state spent $18 million on three mobile tent hospitals that could go up in less than 72 hours. The state has never used them in a disaster, but the tents now cost $1.7 million each year for storage, supplies and personnel. Strapped for money, Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers last year decided to stop paying for upkeep and cut a deal with the Washington-based manufacturer to maintain them through January 2013. Under the agreement, the state must let Blu-Med rent out the tent hospitals if another jurisdiction needs one. But because the deal only lasts one year, the state must find another solution soon or else the tents may become an $18 million dust collector.

Hundreds of motorcycle riders take part in the 32nd Annual Sweetheart Run which began in Auburn with a ride to Georgetown and Coloma. The event was hosted by C & E Auburn V-Twin Inc. and the Gold Country Harley Riders in Auburn. The event is designed to kick off the riding season. Riders were encouraged to bring or sign Valentines cards. Valentines from the event will go to Veterans at the Reno VA Hospital, Mather VA Hospital, Auburn VA Clinic and will be included in packages being mailed to active duty service members in Afghanistan. The Sweetheart Run began 1989 with just seven riders. Last year more than 2,000 participated.

Greg Gibbs picking oranges with Village Harvest, a Davis nonprofit he and his wife Pam co-founded with Joe and Linda Schwartz. The organization harvests fruit trees in peopleÕs yards that would otherwise go to waste. They donate the fruit to agencies like the Yolo County Food Bank and other organizations that feed the hungry.
