A large new training center for police dogs officially opened Saturday at McClellan Airfield in North Highlands.
Sacramento Police Department officials noted that the facility will have 15,000 square feet of training area, training obstacles, kennels and shade structures for canines.
The training center, funded through donations, will be used by law enforcement agencies from throughout the Sacramento area.
"This is the type of training facility that the region has needed for quite some time," said Sgt. Matt Young, spokesman for the Sacramento Police Department.
The department previously trained its dogs at a small east Sacramento facility. The facility will be operated by the Sacramento Police Department, which has about 10 canines.
"The canine unit in any police department is an essential component in terms of officer safety," said Young. "They go into tight quarters and engage armed felons. They do phenomenal work to keep officers and the community safe."
