LIVE: THE GOVERNOR IS MEETING AT THE STATE CAPITOL THIS AFTERNOON WITH THE SENATE'S AND ASSEMBLY'S DEMOCRATIC AND REPUBLICAN LEADERS. THE GOVERNOR CALLED THE MEETING OF WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE "BIG FIVE" TO DISCUSS WHETHER IT IS POSSIBLE TO COMPROMISE ON A WATER BOND, AND WHETHER IT WILL BE IN TIME FOR THE FEBRUARY 2008 PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY BALLOT.

VO: (:20) ASSEMBLY REPUBLICAN LEADER MIKE VILLINES AND HIS DEMOCRATIC COUNTERPART SPEAKER FABIAN NUNEZ ARE NOT VERY OPTIMISTIC A COMPROMISE PLAN CAN BE ACHIEVED FOR FEBRUARY. BOTH LEADERS ARE CONCERNED ABOUT REQUESTING VOTERS TO APPROVE BOND SPENDING WITH THE STATE'S LOOMING 10 BILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT. VILLINES AND THE ASSEMBLY REPUBLICAN BUDGET CHAIR MET WITH THE GOVERNOR THIS MORNING TO DISCUSS POSSIBLY REOPENING THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR'S BUDGET TO ADDRESS THE TWO BILLION DOLLAR SHORTFALL IN THIS SPENDING PLAN, IN ANTICIPATION OF THE EIGHT BILLION DOLLAR HOLE IN THE 2008-2009 BUDGET.

SUPER: ASSEMBLY SPEAKER FABIAN NUNEZ/D-LOS ANGELES

SOT: (:37)
