The Bee's ongoing investigation of the county's Child Protective Services agency has won an award from the National Center on Crime and Delinquency.
The first installment of the series of stories ran last June and showed how the agency failed some of the county's most vulnerable children despite significant increases in staff and budget.
Those named in the PASS award were reporters Marjie Lundstrom and Sam Stanton, graphic journalist Mitchell Brooks and photographer Autumn Cruz, all of whom worked on the series.
The PASS Awards (Prevention for a Safer Society) recognizes print and broadcast journalists "who try to focus America's attention on our criminal justice system, juvenile justice system, and child welfare systems in a thoughtful and considerate manner."
Other California papers awarded this year were the San Jose Mercury News and the Long Beach Press-Telegram.
