The number of births declined in Sacramento and California from 2007 to 2008, the first drop in births in more than a decade. Experts say many residents don't think they can afford a new child in this economy, meaning an even bigger drop may be occurring during 2009. In our region, about 800 fewer babies were born in 2008 than 2007, with the largest declines in east Sacramento, Fair Oaks, Rio Linda and Auburn.
