  • The big leaf maples are in full color this week. I decided to place this branch of leaves in front of the adjacent pine tree to let the maple leaves stand out more vividly. The light is being diffused from the cloud cover and surrounding trees. This photo was made on October 12, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a Canon 24-70mm zoom at 70mm. The exposure was 1/60 sec. at f/9.5 using ISO 800 on a tripod. For more information on shooting fall foliage, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • McGee Creek valley is in full color this week and should hold through next week. Color along the creek will hold a bit longer. This vantage point is off the trail quite a bit and up the side of the mountain. There is lots of heavy brush to climb through. Be prepared for a lot of smoke from the Sequoia N.P. fire blowing in from the west. This photo was made on Septmber 28, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a Canon 24-70mm zoom at 28mm. The exposure was 1/45 sec. at f/9.5 using ISO 400 and a circular polarizing filter on a tripod. For information on using filters, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • The color is coming along nicely in Hope Valley. This week has lots of color and, as you can see, there is still lots of green to turn well into next week. This week and next week will be best for color. This photo was made on October 6, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a 24-70mm zoom at 24mm. The exposure was 1/20 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400 and a circular polarizing filter on a tripod. I threw in a sun star in this back lit scene to make the photo a little more interesting. For more information on lighting, making sun stars and using filters, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • Here's a rare sight of the cottonwoods turning nice color in front of the Markleeville Courthouse. Usually these cottonwoods turn brown and fall. This area between Markleeville and Monitor Pass road along the river is looking nice but will see beter color in about a week. This photo was made on October 6, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a Canon 24-70mm zoom at 35mm. The exposure was 1/90 sec. at f/16 using ISO 400 and a circular polarizing filter on a tripod. For information on using filters, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • All the maples and aspens are in full color this week in Yosemite. The oaks are still considering turning but haven't made up their minds. Look for the oaks to turn in about two weeks. The weather has been rainy all day. Be sure to check the reports to plan your trip. This photo was made on October 12, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a 24-70mm zoom at 75mm. The exposure was 1/60 sec. at f/9.5 using ISO 800 hand-held because I was standing in the street. For fall foloiage photo help, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • Here's another angle of the famed elm in Cook's meadow in Yosemite N.P. From this angle the light is side lighting and using a polarizing filter, gives us the most saturated colors. The color from the deciduous trees are turning nicely but, as you can see, the oaks are still green. Expect them to turn in about two weeks. This photo was made on October 13, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a 24mm tilt/shift lens. The exposure was 1/20 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400 and a circular polarizing filter on a tripod. For information on lighting and using filters, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • This is a good example of how fickle foliage can be. The color around the cabin in Hope Valley is ready to fall but, the trees just behind it are still completely green. This means that we will be shooting well into next week but have stick trees around the cabin. This photo was made on October 6, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a Canon 24-70mm zoom at 65mm. The exposure was 1/60 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400 and a circular polarizing filter on a tripod. For information on using filters, check our Tips & Techniques section.

  • Cook's Meadow Elm
This is a classic shot of the Elm tree in Cook's Meadow in Yosemite. This timing on Yosemite color appears to be on schedule with the average. The elm should hold at least 5 days. I've been shooting this shot for over 30 years and decided to spice it up by creating a sun star. This photo was made October 13, 2007 with a Canon 5D and a 24mm Tilt/Shift lens. The exposure was 1/60 sec. at f/22 using ISO 400 and a circular polarizing filter on a tripod. For information on creating sun stars and using filters, check our Tips & Techniques section.
