Over the weekend, someone stole Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson's suit and other belongings while he helped an elderly man near Union Square in San Francisco. Johnson jokingly said, "Next time I see San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, I'll tell him the story and give him my word nothing like that will happen to him in Sacramento. And I'll hope I can make good on the promise."
There's nowhere in Sacramento with as many thefts as SF's Union Square -- SF police take about 30 larceny reports a month within 500 feet of the square. That said, there are a few Sacramento areas Johnson might want to steer Newsom away from, if he wants to keep his promise. (Three of them are near the Capitol, where Newsom hopes to spend a lot of time, starting next year.)
This map shows the 10 city police grids with the most thefts -- excluding shoplifting and car theft -- from January through August 2009. Click an area to see more details.
