As costumer for the Sacramento Opera's production of "The Elixir of Love," Yvette Harding's job begins long before the curtain rises. It's a job that requires everything from research to sewing skills.

How many are working on the costumes for "Elixir"?

Six, including three union dressers who work dress rehearsals and shows, and a cutter-draper.

What's the costume budget?

Overall, it's $15,000. The fabrication budget is $3,000. I'm frugal.

The Adina character wears pants. Why?

We think she's an independent woman, and we're starting her out in that fashion. She's the first woman character I've costumed in pants.

What was the inspiration for Nemorino's costume?

I based it on the Keanu Reeves film character in "Walk in the Clouds." That takes place in Napa at the same time period we've updated "Elixir" to.

How do you age clothing?

I use this stuff called "Schmutz." It's like a deodarant stick. It's this oil that looks like body sweat on fabric.

Do you know how to sew?

Yes. It's necessary once you get past the dresser stage and work in a costume shop or as wardrobe supervisor.

Where did you learn?

From my mom. I've no formal training. My mother was a seamstress, my dad a cutter for clothing companies.

Does costuming opera differ from theater?

There are more concerns with singers. You have to think about their breathing. Some singers like costumes tight, because it gives them support. Others don't.

Biggest costume crisis?

It was four years ago. I also costume for the Music Circus, and the actress playing Millie in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" had the zipper break to her wedding dress. I had to sew her back in with only 10 seconds to do so.

What happens to costumes after a show?

We sell some clothes to actors. It keeps our storage needs low.
