Last week, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed $1.2 billion in school administration cuts, including central office cuts. But relative to the rest of the nation, California school district central offices aren't fat. "I don't know that the administration has made a firm case that there is a real problem," Jennifer Kuhn, director director of the K-12 education branch of the Legislative Analyst's Office, said during an interview.

The map below shows the number of central office administrators per 10,000 students by state.

Note: This map, like the governor's proposal, only looks at district-level administration, so it doesn't include school-level administrators -- principals, for instance.
