When Jerry Brown was inaugurated on Jan. 3, he found a state that has changed radically since he left office after two terms in early 1983. California has become more polarized between the mountains and the coast. There are many more foreign-born residents, and incomes have gone up, even after adjusting for inflation. Political reporting students at the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism researched the changing demographics.
