The state Department of Public Health announced earlier this week that the number of teen births in California fell to a record low during 2009. About 9 percent of births during 2009 in California were to teen mothers, down from 11 percent a decade earlier.

Teen births are also declining in the Sacramento region. Still, in some local areas, particularly those with a lot of poverty, more than one of every eight births were to teen mothers during 2009. This map shows, by zip code, the percentage of births during 2009 to teen mothers.
