It says something about the Bradshaw Christian sports program that athletic director Mike Ruble would be a little disappointed with Friday night's results in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V girls and boys basketball playoffs at Power Balance Pavilion.
For one of the busiest men in high school athletics he also coaches the boys and girls basketball teams it was a mixed night.
His top-seeded girls behind four-year varsity starters Jordie Smith, Lauren Beyer and Fernandi Espinosa defeated second-seeded Brookside Christian of Stockton 44-32 to win their fourth consecutive D-V title and extend their section playoff winning streak to 16, the fourth-longest in section history.
But the boys had a decidedly different result. The second-seeded Pride couldn't slow down sizzling-shooting Vacaville Christian, falling 90-63 to their fourth-seeded rival that finished behind the Pride in the Sierra Delta League.
While many schools crave the opportunity to play for a section title and sometimes wait years to do it, it's getting to be routine for the 223-student Sacramento school.
In its sixth year of varsity athletics, Bradshaw Christian has won 10 section championships. In addition to the girls basketball teams, the Pride also has won two section football titles and one apiece in boys basketball and baseball.
"Our whole school is full of student-athletes," said Smith, who is headed to Vanguard University in Costa Mesa on scholarship. "We're dedicated to our teams and our sports. Obviously, the success we have had in athletics helps bring attention to the school."
The girls basketball program has been one of the school's centerpieces, with Smith, Beyer and Espinosa leading the way.
Smith had a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, while UC Davis-bound Beyer added 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Pride (22-9). Espinosa directed the action at point guard while helping throttle a Brookside Christian team (25-6) that came in averaging 70.5 points per game, sixth-best in California.
Pride sophomore Ashlee Jones played outstanding defense in holding section scoring leader Tiara Tucker to 11 points on 3-of-15 shooting from the floor.
Freshman Tucker, No. 2 in California and No. 8 nationally, came in averaging 31.6 points.
"That's the (key to) the game," Ruble said. "She did a really good job against the section scoring leader."
Ruble could have used a little of that defensive intensity on the boys side.
Vacaville Christian (25-6) shot a sizzling 62.5 percent from the field (35 of 56), including 12 of 17 in the third quarter. That's when the Falcons pulled away after leading 44-40 at halftime.
"The girls have kept me sane the boys drive me a little crazy," Ruble said between games.
Senior forward Brandon Barnes led Vacaville Christian with 29 points. Senior center Scott Ecklund topped Bradshaw Christian (21-8) with 23 points.
Bradshaw Christian played without three-sport star Brady Dragmire, the senior guard who injured his ankle early in an 80-71 loss Feb. 16 to Vacaville Christian.
All four teams will advance to next week's CIF Northern California Regionals. First-round matchups will be announced Sunday.
