Placer County continues to grow as a wine region, to the point now that Lincoln has its first full-production winery.
Just about 20 minutes from the Roseville Galleria, you'll find Wise Villa Winery, which is celebrating its grand opening on Saturday at 4100 Wise Road, Lincoln; (916) 543-0323.
The boutique winery focuses on conventional domestic varietals from primarily estate fruit: cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, chardonnay and a pinot noir-based rosé. You'll also find 2010 Nocturnal Light, which is crafted from torrontes, the signature white wine grape of Argentina.
Wise Villa Winery is also bottling a blend of chardonnay and muscat canelli with a moderate 13 percent alcohol. Prices at Wise Villa Winery run from about $20 to $33 a bottle.
Placer County's already showing up on the wine competition circuit as a place with plenty of promise. Casque Wines of Loomis was named best micro winery at the 2010 California State Fair Commercial Wine Competition and uses local fruit. Casque Wines will also be using the new tasting room at Wise Villa to show off its wines.
So how does Wise Villa stack up? Come by Saturday and taste for yourself. The grand opening festivities will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information: www.wisevillawinery.com
There and back again
There's a new wine director at Market at Pavilions, sort of: Jeffrey DeVore was hired to head its wine program back in 2008. He eventually left to pursue other wine-related adventures, but now he's back.
DeVore recently resumed his wine director duties at the store, albeit on a part-time basis.
DeVore says to expect more of the Friday night tastings and wine trivia contests that he instituted at the store.
Recent Friday night tastings at the Market at Pavilions have included lineups of Italian wines and domestic pinot noir. The cost ranges between $10 and $15. Information: www.marketat pavilions.com, 515 Pavilions Lane, Sacramento; (916) 929-4422.
