1315 21st St., Sacramento, (916) 441-7100
Hours: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday
Happy hour: 2-7 p.m. daily
The real steal: At this colorful, quiet restaurant, you can try modern dishes with a little Indian flair fries cooked with Indian spices ($2.95) or chicken wings barbecued in a clay oven ($3.95) or go more traditional with options such as chicken pakora (chicken fritters battered in chickpea flour) for $3.95 or masala papadaam (roasted papaya with onion, tomato, cilantro and spices) for $1.95. Pair a couple of dishes with a well drink ($3) or a Pabst ($1.50) for a complete meal.
The vibe: This quiet little operation will work well for small groups looking for a quick bite to eat. There is plenty of seating and room to lounge, should you prefer to stay a while. Make it a sociable outing by sitting at the bar and chatting with other patrons, or a more intimate affair by grabbing one of the tables by the window.
Signature drink: Bombay Bar and Grill has several, including the citrus rum cooler, made with rum, orange liqueur and mint, and the St. Germain cocktail, made with pear vodka and elderflower liqueur ($7 each).
Bathroom break: The single-occupancy facilities are stylishly decorated in the same vein as the restaurant: bold, rich colors are joined by elegant details like polished bronze faucets and opalescent glass mosaic trim.
Something extra: Whereas most bars keep their televisions tuned to sports networks, Bombay Bar and Grill keeps at least one screen rolling Bollywood music videos, adding an interesting cultural perspective to the bar.
Alternative libations: A few Indian beers Kingfisher, Flying Horse Royal and Taj Mahal are available here, if you're tired of the standards.
Take a seat: The window seats offer a view of busy 21st Street, ideal for people-watching.
