Meet of Champions to feature Duke-bound area athletes

Published: Friday, Apr. 29, 2011 - 12:00 am | Page 2C

Davis High School's Ian Rock enters Saturday's 31st annual Sacramento Meet of Champions at Hughes Stadium ranked No. 6 in California in the boys pole vault with a best of 16 feet, 1 inch.

But Rock won't haul around his poles in a meet that brings together a number of the state's top high school track and field athletes, including national No. 1 girls hurdler Trinity Wilson of St. Mary's High of Berkeley and No. 2 girls triple jumper Ciarra Brewer of James Logan of Union City.

Rock instead will focus on the long and triple jumps, according to meet director Jerry Colman.

And with good reason.

The senior is headed to Duke, where he plans to compete as a decathlete.

Rock isn't the only area track and field athlete going to the Durham, N.C., school. Jesuit's Stephen Boals, No. 2 in California in the boys shot put at 64-21/2 and No. 9 in the boys discus at 178-5, is also headed to Duke. He's scheduled to compete in both events in Saturday night's invitational portion of the meet.

Boals will be the favorite in the shot put, but the senior will be an underdog in the discus. Granite Bay's James Kinloch (186-6) is state-ranked No. 4 and Vacaville's Curtis Bleasdale (179-1) is No. 8.

Wilson, a junior, has a national best of 13.50 seconds in the girls 100-meter hurdles set April 23 in the Brutus Hamilton Open at Cal. She holds the national sophomore record of 13.49. She also is state-ranked No. 4 in the 200 meters (24.37), which she also is scheduled to run at the MOC.

Brewer, a senior and Florida scholarship signee who set a personal record of 42-41/4 in the triple jump in 2009, is No. 2 nationally outdoors this season with a best of 40-91/2. She also jumped 42-31/2 in February at the indoor Simplot Games in Pocatello, Idaho.

Also competing is Granite Bay girls pole vault state leader Katie Zingheim. Her 13-4 best ranks No. 3 nationally, although the senior could be challenged by state No. 3 Cimran Virdi (12-6) of Las Lomas-Walnut Creek and No. 5 Angie Charles (12-4) of Bella Vista.

State No. 2 Lissette Mendivil (156-7) of Redwood of Visalia is coming north to compete in the girls discus, where state No. 5 Briana French (153-8) of Vacaville is her leading challenger.

Galt's Haran Piggee is state-ranked No. 5 in the boys long jump (23-61/2) and could be tested by Freedom of Oakley's D'Amora Cooper. He has a best of 23-43/4, a non-wind instrument-measured mark.

Another competitive field should be in the boys 3,200. El Camino's Chris Kigar (9:05.40) is ranked No. 8 in the state, but Colman said Davis' Trevor Halsted (9:10.18) and Oak Ridge's Benji Xie (9:13.61) also are running well.

Halsted (4:16.70 relay split) and Kigar (4:17.40) are expected to battle Bryan Jordan of Galena, Nev., (4:14.20) in the boys 1,600.
