The activity: Archery

Where to do it:

There are several archery ranges in the Sacramento area. The range at Discovery Park (I-5 and Garden Highway) is drying out after being flooded in late March and early April. The Maya Archers have been in Roseville (750 Galleria Blvd.) for 30 years. Two other clubs are: the Gold Country JOAD, 5451 Coyote Pass Road, Shingle Springs; and the Yolo Bowmen, Grasslands Regional Park, south of Davis on Mace Boulevard.

What's the big deal?

Says Carlos Rodriguez, president of the Maya Archers: "You get to meet a lot of people who come from different backgrounds. We like the challenge of bettering ourselves. It's fun showing kids how to use a bow. That's the future of the sport. There's not a lot of old- timers left."

Want to learn?

Most of the clubs in the area put on clinics and teach lessons. Many city recreation and parks programs offer seasonal archery classes. Said Rodriguez: "If someone's never done it before, it's actually good because they don't have bad habits. That's especially true for kids, who pick it up easy. It's a lot of hand-eye coordination. It all comes down to practice."

The cost factor: Most clubs charge yearly memberships ranging from $25 to $100. Some ranges, such as Grasslands Regional Park, are open to the public with a $5 daily fee. Said Rodriguez: "For a new bow, with arrows and quivers, you're looking at $1,200-$1,500, but you'd probably be able to find a good bow on Craigslist for a couple hundred dollars."
