Jesuit will defend Masters golf crown

Jesuit, Granite Bay and El Camino won Sac-Joaquin Section Division I North, D-II and D-III team boys golf championships, respectively, on Monday. All advanced to this Monday's Masters Championship at the Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

Jesuit, the defending Masters champion, finished with a 378 at Paradise Valley in Fairfield. Medalist Ben Corfee led the way for the Marauders with a par 72. Davis (404) finished second and Oak Ridge (414) third to advance to the Masters as teams.

Advancing as individuals were Jeremy Ashburn and Corey Pereira of Ponderosa, Folsom's Taylor Knoll and Elk Grove's Patrick Levin.

In the D-II match at Haggin Oaks' MacKenzie Course, Granite Bay won with a score of 379. Last year's D-II champ, Christian Brothers, took second (382) and Del Oro (398) third to advance to the Masters.

Woodcreek's Lee Gearhart and Del Oro's Austin Smotherman finished as medalists with 71s. Gearhart joined Oakmont's Cory Eddings (75) and Casa Roble's Dylan Neal (76) as individual Masters qualifiers.

El Camino (419) and Lincoln (437) advanced to the Masters after placing first and second, respectively, in the D-III final at Plumas Lake in Olivehurst. Yuba City's Taylor Brown (73), Woodland's Will Scarlett (76) and Mira Loma's Chris Stankievicz (77) also advanced.

Other individual Masters qualifiers included Union Mine's Kyle Listar (79) in D-IV, Dixon's Garrett Rasmussen (78) in D-V and Woodland Christian's Beau Chandon (84) in D-VI.

Section swimming finals begin today

The Sac-Joaquin Section boys and girls swim championships will take place today through Saturday at Tokay High in Lodi.

The girls trials are today, the boys Friday. Championships will be Saturday.

Jesuit will seek its fourth boys championship in five years. St. Francis is the defending girls champion.

Competition begins at 10 a.m. all three days.

Rocklin's Casiple wins state soccer award

Rocklin senior Seth Casiple has been selected the 2010-11 Gatorade California Boys Soccer Player of the Year. The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.

Casiple, a midfielder, is a member of the U.S. National U-18 men's team and will play on scholarship for Cal.

Granite Bay boys take lacrosse title

Granite Bay won its second consecutive Sacramento Valley Lacrosse Conference boys title and third in four years May 5 by defeating Jesuit 6-5 on Jack Hanly's winning fourth-quarter goal.

Hanly and Chris Campbell each scored two goals, and goalie Brad Ludwig had eight saves for Granite Bay, which finished 9-1 in conference play and 13-3 overall.
