A good 90 minutes before the first pitch Tuesday night, the coaches met to chat and exchange lineup cards.
Jesuit's Joe Potulny, relaxed and jovial, cracked to his rival and friend Todd Melton of Oak Ridge that ace Logan James was dealing with a sliced finger.
Such a kidder.
In truth, James was fit and motivated, a far cry from his sore elbow from months ago, and he sliced his way through a formidable lineup.
The junior left-hander struck out the first four batters he faced all swinging and six of his first seven. He had 10 strikeouts and allowed three hits in six innings of work and, coupled with a seven-run fifth inning, keyed an 8-0 win in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I North winner's bracket showdown at American River College.
Hitting the high 80s with his fastball, according to radar guns aimed his way, the pitches looked even faster under the dim lights at home plate. James (5-0) helped Jesuit (23-7) improve to 3-0 in this tournament.
Jesuit needs one more win for the program's sixth North title since 1994, all under Potulny, a Jesuit graduate who downplays all of this success.
As pleased as Potulny was with this latest charge to the top, he was quick to remind his crew it was in this same position a year ago: a win away from celebration, only to slump in despair as Elk Grove roared back through the loser's bracket to win it.
Friday, Jesuit takes on the winner of Thursday's loser's bracket finale between Oak Ridge (20-10) and Pleasant Grove. All told, the Delta River League-only party is a remarkable show of strength for the conference.
With big-game poise, James said it was his best effort of the season "by far," and college scouts in the stands took notice. James' parents Connie and Zach sweated out the innings behind home plate.
In the fifth, team leader Brian Celsi had a two-run single, Rhys Hoskins an RBI double and Parker Abercrombie a two-run base hit.
Jesuit also played superb defense throughout, from outfielder Joe Williams to double-play stops by the infield that includes Hoskins, Cameron Iwasa, Zach Green and Louis Mejia.
"Best outing of the year for Logan," Potulny said. "He was great."
Roseville 8, Woodcreek 2 at Sacramento City College Matt Maher tossed a five-hitter with six strikeouts, and Anthony Roberts and Dalton Blaser combined to score seven runs to launch the Tigers into Monday's Division II title game against Sierra Foothill League rival Rocklin.
Roseville senior three-sport star Nick Blaser was again superb at shortstop with five assists against Woodcreek (15-14), led by retiring coach Kelly Mayo, a former Roseville skipper.
Roseville (21-9) last won section titles in 1982 and '84, and beat Rocklin two out of three times early in SFL play by scores of 2-1 and 4-1 (and lost 3-2). Rocklin won the SFL title and seeks a section title three-peat.
