Supervisors took a break from a busy day of budget hearings and other matters today to accept a $20,000 donation from Eppie Johnson, founder of Eppie's Great Race. In exchange, supervisors wore outfits - including a clown wig, a bike helmet, and a life preserver - and mimicked the events in the annual race on the American River Parkway: running, biking and boating. They ran around the board chambers.
The money goes to the county's Therapeutic Recreation Services, which provides skills to people with disabilities and special needs. The race, which is in its 38th year, has contributed nearly $1 million to the program, organizers say.
The donations have become especially important as the county struggles with budget cuts over recent years, officials say. Supervisors will resume to budget work this afternoon.
"This will be the highlight of the day, believe me," Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan said after receiving a huge version of the "check" from Johnson.
