Daniel Kosakowski defeated Steve Johnson 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 Sunday to win the men's singles title in the $15,000 Park Terrace Pro Tennis tournament at the Park Terrace Swim & Tennis Club, the United States Tennis Association reported.
The key to the victory for the unseeded Kosakowski, a Downey resident who played No. 1 singles as a freshman at UCLA this season, came in the third set when he overcame a love-40 deficit to tie the match 3-3. He then held serve and went on to win.
The eighth-seeded Johnson, who plays for USC, won the NCAA men's singles tennis championship this year.
After the match, Kosakowski announced that he is turning pro.
The team of Sekou Bangoura and Alexandre LaCroix, who play doubles for Florida, defeated James Ludlow of Utah and Ty Trombetta of Florida 6-4, 7-6(3) for the doubles title.
• Yasmin Schnack of Elk Grove and Amanda Fink of Calabasas lost 7-5, 4-6, 10-8 to Chichi Scholl of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Alyona Sotnikova of Ukraine in the doubles final of the $25,000 Hunt Communities USTA Pro Tennis Classic in El Paso, Texas, the USTA reported. Scholl also won the singles championship.
