Casey Robbins, the Mira Loma High senior who spent four years sending textbooks to Liberia, has been awarded $36,000 by the Helen Diller Family Foundation and the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco.
Robbins was one of five Californians to receive the Diller Teen Tikkun Olam Award, given to teens who initiate social projects.
The 17-year-old has sent nearly 20,000 books to the country, which has been recovering from years of civil war.
The Liberian government is opening the Casey Robbins International School in Monrovia, Liberia's capital city, in the girl's honor.
The Sacramento teen started the project in eighth grade after hearing a Capital Public Radio interview with Liberia's Deputy Minister of Information, Gabriel I.H. Williams.
The Helen Diller Family Foundation will honor the award winners in a luncheon in San Francisco on Aug. 29.
